I would like to know the most challenging pin combination to pick (rake and wrench). I have heard that the maximum pin difference is 5 (a 2 next to a seven for example). If this is true, then would 27272 be harder to pick than say 94949 or 49494?

Using your numbers, 27227, 49449. MACS on some locks is greater than five and as little as two on others.
