I recently had someone pick the lock on my front door and actually get in. I was home, and when they realized I was, they left; I’m terrified now. I know I can get a deadbolt that only locks from the inside and there’s no access to it from the outside, so it’s only effective when I’m home. What would be the best kind of lock that I can open from the outside as well? Thanks so much for any advice!

You can buy a good quality deadbolt that you unlock from the outside. If you buy a Schlage, Falcon or Arrow they are pretty good quality and you can get one for about $30. If you want heavy pick resistance and pay the money for it, look into Medeco. They are virtually impossible to pick because they have two sets of pins… the standard ones that when you look at a normal key you see the grooves on top… and also pins on the side. So the key looks pretty funky. Stay away from Kwikset, they are cheap and easy to pick. It is a good idea that when you buy the deadbolt, to also buy a high quality knob to replace your current one.
a schlage deadbolt can be keyed from the outside.
The best lock I have found to be the safest is a deadbolt, but not one that is keyed on both sides. you want to be able to exit in an emergency without hunting for a key.
The best lock to get is a real aggressive pit bull dog or a german shepherd, I have both, my bull dog is hooked up out by my back door, and the german shepherd is in the house. And people just don’t come here unless they call first.
deadbolt is the best ,&inside the house best bet would be a chain lock
Schlage makes good products that are resistant to picking. Call in a locksmith, & have your entire house re-keyed. You might consider having high security locks put in so copies of keys can’t be made by anybody but you. Your locksmith can explain how that is done.
A monitored security system that is designed to allow you to arm it while you are home as well as away will also go a long way to put your mind at rest.
Be safe!
There are keyed locks that cannot be picked. Call your local Locksmith. Simple Slage, or other locks found at hardware stores are easy. I generally can open them in 2 min or less.(I took a correspondence course in Locksmithing when I was young). A good locksmith can do what you need for just about twice what t would cost to buy, and have installed, a cheap lock.
all locks can be picked, try a 2×4 (or steel beam) placed vertically in front of the door and grounded in the floor say about 2 or 3 inches deep and secured to the door using brackets use this while your are at home to reinforce the door knob lock and dead bolt.
any lock can be picked. most houses have glass windows that can be broken. almost any door can be kicked in. all doors can be broken down with a sledge hammer or ram. most door jambs can be spread with a jack enough to pop them open.
get the picture?
take a fire arms class and buy a .22 revolver. there about $100 and look and sound like a howitzer in the dark.
Possum
You can get Deadbolt locks that are keyed on the outside and have an easy to turn lever/knob on the inside so you can easily get out.
I would suggest the Titan by Kwikset. It is very difficult to drill and even more difficult to pick. But don’t be fooled any lock can be picked.
You need an alarm system. I would also suggest a 12 ga. shotgun with a tactical light for night and some OO buck. For indoor use you will be better off with a short barrel federal requirements are 18".
Mossberg makes a great little number they call the 500A.
Your choice is alarm system and high security locks. All high security locks are pick proof. Do not believe that all locks are pickable. Do not go with Kwikset Titan – it’s not high security and very easy to pick or break. You have to install eather MUL-T-LOCK (one of the best locks now days) or Medeco.
My deadbolt opens from the inside and outside and locks on the inside – I have two different types – one requires a key to unlock it and the other just has a button to unlock – try Schlage company – I believe they have a site online – good luck and do it today!@~
Having read the answers so far I would concur with the person who mentioned the locksmith, go and seek their advise, they know more than anyone else which are the hardest locks to pick, they deal with them 24/7
