i have a master lock that i need to open, i cant break the lock because i have plans for the lock after i pick it unlocked.

Unless you have a pick set and are qualified to use it, forget trying to pick open the padlock. Just buy a new padlock they are less than $5. bucks. Cut the old lock off or drill out the key hole until you can turn the key cylinder.
If you plan to reuse the lock you will eventually need a key, I would suggest having a locksmith come out and unlock it and rekey it…
One the cheaper ones you file all the teeth aff except the ones on the bottom. You can tell these because they have teeth on both sides. If it is a real good one you can take the number of it in and they can make you a key by that number. You need a lock smith that knows something for this though.
Bite the bullet and cut the lock. Then buy a new one. That is a lot cheaper than having a locksmith make a service call.
Depending on what type of lock you are talking about, you can try this to see if it works.
Take an aluminum can, and cut a peice out of it.
curve the can around the side that goes into the lock, make sure the aluminum is on the inside of the lock.
Slide the can downward into the lock, it should release and open for you.
Be careful not to cut yourself with the can, use gloves if you have them.
