While getting through locked doors is generally considered the vocation of thieves it can also be a handy skill in a lot of other scenarios, the most common being when a key for a door around the house or office has become locked. Sometimes it can also be a very handy skill in an emergency, for example should a relative or friend fall in the shower and the door needs to be opened to help them.

Fortunately there are several ways in which you can open a locked door or otherwise get through. The first and perhaps best known is to pick the lock. Specialist lock-pick sets can be purchased online for not very much at all and these will make the whole process a lot easier. That said, a lock pick set is still not something that many of us happen to have lying around in case of emergency which means there’s often a good chance you won’t have one when it’s needed. In these scenarios any two long thin implements can be used – such as hair pins or paper clips straightened out.

From here the idea is to manoeuvre the tools in such a way that you can clear the passage way or ‘chamber’ inside. Most locks around the house these days use a cylinder locking mechanism, which works by using tiny metal pins that fit inside the cylinder to prevent it from turning. With the two tools or lock picks you can then feel around for these pins and push them up and out. This is however very fiddly and can take time if you’re not practiced. For this reason it’s not suitable for an emergency.

In the case of an emergency then (or if you‘ve just given up with the fiddly lock picking), you may want to break the door down. On TV you may have seen people barging the door down with their shoulder but in reality this is a fast track to a dislocated arm. Instead you’re much better off kicking the door with the heel of your shoe and aiming for the weakest point on the door. Often it pays to kick the actual handle itself, as the wood here is usually thinnest and most hollow to allow for the locking mechanism (ironically). Failing this, aim for the area just left of the handle (assuming the lock is on the right) as this area will be structurally the weakest being furthest from the edges and nearest to the thing handle area. This obviously should still be reserved for the most pressing occasions only.

Depending on what you’re locked out of you may also want to consider breaking in through a window, or climbing in through a window if its been left open. Again if you are breaking a window to get in then you are causing damage to your property and also dealing with dangerous shards of glass. Additionally you will have to be ready to show ID and proof of address if you are stopped by the police. Of course if you’re in no hurry you can save yourself a lot of time and money by calling a locksmith.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the number pad labeled 1 2 3 8 and not 1 2 3 4?
In some Asian countries the number 8 is considered lucky, while 4 is unlucky. So we have given you a very lucky keypad (especially good if this door is located on your bedroom door!). The door of my master bedroom is installed with a tubular lock. Can I change it to the CVKJ-J15 fingerprint lock without any hassle?
Yes, you can do direct replacement of tubular lock with CVKJ-J15 fingerprint lock. The installation is quite simple with just a screwdriver. Does the CVKJ-J15 fingerprint lock have a low battery alert?
Yes. When you slide the cover up and hear a triple BiBiBi sound instead of the normal one Bi sound, then the battery is low. You can still operate the unit about 100 times. However, change the batteries immediately when there is low battery alert because once the battery dies you can only open the door with the keys (and there are only two). This is very important if you own a business, because you do not want to lock out your employees. Is the CVKJ-J15 Waterproof?
No, the unit is weatherproof but not waterproof. Meaning any outside door that is in a well covered area where there will be no direct rain or snow contact is acceptable, but the unit can never be directly exposed to constant water contact. Can the CVKJ-J15 fingerprint door lock sense fake fingers?
Yes. Individual sensor elements of the 3D CMOS sensor can sense both the tactile surface and skin charge from the finger to get a 3D image of the fingerprint. It will reject fakes such as photocopies, pictures, wax coatings, fake fingers, and even dead fingers cannot fool the 3D sensor! We have some sensitive employees, they are worried about a machine storing their fingerprints. What can I tell them?
This model stores the fingerprint data in a military-grade encoded file type that is only readable by this machine. In addition, the fingerprints are stored as data and not as images. What’s the difference between a fingerprint lock and traditional tubular lock? Why should I change to a fingerprint lock?
A fingerprint lock brings keyless convenience to your daily life. Your finger is the key, so it is always with you! The CVKJ-J15 with advanced performance features brings a user-friendly entry interface to your daily life. How can I access the keyhole when there is cover over it?
By using the tip of your thumb you can push open the cover, then use your other hand to pull up the cover and keep it fully open while you insert the key.

Fingerprint door locks are just another example of how our society has evolved into the technological era so quickly. These kinds of locks are great for protecting your office, building, or even your home. But before purchasing any, you probably have similar questions as many others do.

1. Are they affordable?

Because of how technological these locks are, a common question is how expensive they are. A few years ago you would only find fingerprint door locks at CEO’s homes and celebrity homes because of the outrageous prices. That has completely changed now though. Any home can find an affordable lock and have it installed for a reasonable price.

2. How do you open the door?

Every fingerprint door lock is different, but a majority of them have three ways you can go about opening the door: mechanical key override, keypad-code, and fingerprint reader. The fingerprint reader is the most common one for households because of the many uses it will receive. The keypad is best for houses and offices that will have a one time entrance from visitors. And lastly, the mechanical key override is for in case of an emergency or dead battery.

3. How reliable are they?

A few years ago, they were just getting tested out and were truly not that reliable for the amount people were paying for them. However, a lot has been learned over the past few years and now they are extremely reliable. You would be surprised at how they never jam up, almost always open on the first finger scan, and the battery generally lasts an entire year.

4. How secure are they?

Fingerprint door locks give you added security when compared to the typical padlock or deadbolt. With these locks, there is a specialized key override as oppose to a key slot. This makes it impossible to pick the lock, which eliminates burglars from entering your home through the doors.

5. How many fingerprints can the lock hold?

This is often a concern among households who want their kids to be able to get in. And amazingly, a fingerprint door lock can hold at least 75 fingerprints. The installation is quick and easy, and generally requires admin fingerprints to be entered in first. Only the admin fingerprints can add or delete fingerprints in the future.

Getting fingerprint door locks for your home, office, or building is a good idea. It can increase the safety of your home and free you of losing your keys all the time. And with technology continuing to advance, they have become affordable and extremely reliable.

Nothing is more important than the security of your home and your loved ones. One of the most basic things you can do to protect your valuables is to secure your residence with quality door locks. The entry point for the majority of burglaries is through a door because it is the quickest and easiest route in and out of your home.

It may surprise you to learn that most building codes don’t require a lock on external doors. Because building codes do not require a minimum standard for door locks, most contractors select locks based on price. Therefore, it is extremely important for you to examine your existing locks to determine whether or not you need an upgrade.

Types of Locks

1.	Knob locks – spring latch and dead latch varieties. These locks can be easily picked or forced. They are best used on interior doors, such as bedrooms and bathrooms, or in combination with deadbolts.

2.	Deadbolts – many different varieties. These are the most secure kind of lock. They should be used on all exterior doors of your home.

3.	Chains – most are attached to the door and frame with short screws. Chains are generally not very thick or strong. They are useful as secondary protection. Do not use as your main method of security.

4.	Wedges – rubber or wooden triangle that can be wedged under the door to prevent it from opening more than a few inches. These can be reinforced by inserting two steel pins into the floor behind it. Good as secondary protection, especially on bedroom doors, as they can slow an intruder down.

Deadbolts

Many would-be burglars will move on to another home if they see high-quality deadbolts installed on all your exterior doors. No matter what type of deadbolt you purchase, there are a few key features that every deadbolt should have.

First, make sure that your deadbolt extends at least one inch into the wall. Second, the lock should be made entirely of metal, and there should be no exposed screws on the outside of the door. Finally, to ensure you are purchasing a quality lock, be sure that it has an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Grade 1 classification.

There are two types of deadbolt locks, single cylinder and double cylinder. Single cylinder locks require a keyed entry from the outside but can be locked with a turning knob from the inside.

Double cylinder deadbolts require a key both internally and externally to lock and unlock the door. Double cylinder locks are more secure for doors containing glass or that are located near a window. However, they can create a safety hazard in the event that a quick exit is required. It is a good idea to keep a key in a designated location near the door in case of fire or other emergencies.

Additional Lock Features

Free-spinning Collar – One quarter of home invasions occur when the perpetrator manipulates the lock in some fashion. If an intruder attempts to saw off the bolt, the free-spinning collar makes it difficult for him to get a cut as the bolt spins with every motion. This feature also prevents burglars from removing the bolt with a wrench or vise grips. You can purchase drill-resistant deadbolts as well that contain steel chips within the lock housing that destroy drill bits.

Strike Plates – Strike plates come with every door lock, but not all of them offer security. The strike plate is generally the most vulnerable portion of the entire door lock. The strike plate should be made of a heavy metal and attached to the door frame and stud wall with screws that are at least 3 inches long. The screw holes should be staggered for extra security as this makes it more difficult to split the wood door frame with a heavy impact.

Doors & Door Frames

No matter what kind of lock you select, it can easily become useless if you do not have a sturdy door and door frame.

You should use solid wood core or metal doors for all exterior entries to your home, including doors leading from your garage to the interior of your home. The doors should be at least 1 ¾ inches thick without any glass panels that would allow a thief to reach in and unlock your door from the inside.

It is important to have a durable door frame as well because burglars often employ a technique called “spreading” to enter your home. This involves planting a wedge between the frame and the wall and applying pressure until the wood bows to allow entry.

To protect your home from this kind of forced entry, install 3 to 4 inch screws along the door strip and frame. The screws should penetrate the stud to hold the door frame and door strip securely to the main wall.

The Next Step
Once you have the appropriate door lock installed, the most important thing to remember is to use it! One-third of all home intruders gain access through an unlocked door or window.
