Why is it that a lock out seems to occur at the most inopportune time? You’re just getting home from the pub and you realize your house keys are sitting inside on the dining room table. All the windows and doors are locked and you certainly don’t want to call anyone to bring you a key, if there even happens to be someone to call!

  Will a 24 7 Locksmith Cost More?

You always pay more for convenience, whether it’s for a fast food burger vs. one you make at home or the services of a locksmith at night rather than during the day. While you will usually pay more for the service, you will find those companies that charge outrageous fees for service after dark or on the weekend and holidays. Most of the time, the smaller locksmith companies are the ones that usually have the higher fees for after hours service.

  You Need a Trustworthy 24 7 Locksmith

You’ll be allowing the locksmith access to your home. They will know how to open your doors and most will end up inside, if only for a moment. You need to make sure the company you use to get you inside your home is trustworthy. Now is not the time to use the locksmith that advertised on the peg board in the local filling station. If you don’t already have a locksmith that you have used before, then it’s time to choose one out of the phonebook or call someone close to you for suggestions. It’s not a good idea to use a company you’ve never heard of to let you in your house at 2 a.m. You could end up with more than you bargained for.

Don’t Let the Price Increase After the Locksmith’s Arrival

You also don’t want to pay more than the price that was quoted on the phone. Make sure you let the locksmith company know what type of door and lock is on your home and you will probably be asked to provide identification as well. This keeps the locksmith from opening a door to a home that isn’t yours. (Depending on how long you have been a pub, this could be a possibility!) Unless you feel the locksmith has a valid reason for increasing the price, stick to the figure given to you over the phone. Make sure you confirm this price with the locksmith before any work begins.

  A Few Final Thoughts

If a lock out is a common occurrence for you, then maybe it’s time to get a spare set of keys made. You’ll need to keep them in a safe place (not under the doormat) or give a set to a close and trusted friend. This will help save you money the next time you’re locked out!

In addition, you may wish to do the same with your car keys as well. Most people carry the home and car keys on one ring. Therefore, when they have lost one, they’ve lost them both. A spare set is the best way to keep this from happening to you again! If not, you’ll probably need the services of a 24 7 locksmith again.
Resource Box
Always Locksmith is a 24 7 locksmith that is already ready to serve you anywhere in the greater London area. This experienced and professional company can help you with any of your locksmithing needs.

Locksmiths do a large variety of jobs for both commercial and residential buildings today. However, while you may think a lock is simply a lock, there can be a large difference in the price you pay for service. If you want to insure that you are getting the most reasonable locksmith prices around, you need to understand how a locksmith charges for their service and how you can avoid hidden fees or outrageous rates. Consider the following tips if you want to avoid paying more than you should.

Emergency Lock Changes or Unlocks: The Highest Locksmith Prices

Emergency service is going to be the highest priced service a locksmith offers today. After all, you are not only paying for a service, you are also paying for convenience. In order for a locksmith to make himself available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, you are going to pay a premium. Whether you are locked out of your home, locked out of your car or you need the locks changed on your property, you are going to pay a lot more to get it done immediately after business hours. Try to avoid after hours rates or weekend rates to get the best deal.

Commercial Rates Can Cost More than Residential Locksmith Prices

Hiring a locksmith for a commercial project can cost more than hiring one for a residential project. After all, businesses generally require more locks, higher quality locks, and security features that a residence would not. However, this does not mean that you should just accept the fact that you are going to pay high process. Instead, you need to set up a bidding process or allow companies to come out and give you quotes. A good company will offer a commercial quote free of charge. When you allow locksmiths to compete for your business, you are sure to get the best price. Don’t just take the first price that comes along. After all, there are hundreds of locksmiths available in most places today.

Fashion Is Costly When It Comes To Residential Locks

When you need a residential lock changed or upgraded you are going to pay the highest price to be fashionable. Pewter finished locks and brass designs are often the priciest options. If you are looking to save money, you will need to go with a simpler finish that is just as appealing. You may also want to consider a combo lock setup. This type of lock will provide you with a high level of safety at a reasonable price since you are only purchasing one piece.

Make Sure You Compare Apples to Apples

When you compare the rate that your locksmith quotes, you need to make sure you are comparing like items and services. Consider the warranty offered on the item, as well as any special services, such as key replacement service. After all, you may be willing to pay the extra twenty bucks just to know you can get a replacement key anytime one is needed. Some locksmiths will even offer a discount off future service once you become a customer. Read the fine print and make sure you are getting the best deal for your buck.

Resource Box

Always Locksmith operates in the greater London area and is one of the most reputable service companies you will find. For the best in service, products, and customer car, you should take a few minutes to see what they have to offer.

              How a Deadbolt Lock Works

When you turn the key in the cylinder, a connecting tailpiece engages the bolt mechanism. This causes the bolt to extend or retract. Twisting the thumb-turn on the interior side also causes the bolt to extend or retract.

Most deadbolts are relatively simple and contain the same parts (cylinder, cylinder guard, bolt assembly, thumb-turn, tailpiece, and mounting screws), but you can get high-security locks with special parts.

For example, the Abloy Disklock features adapter rings and a bolt assembly protector. The bolt assembly protector goes between the cylinder and bolt assembly and has a hood that covers the internal parts of the bolt assembly. This protects the lock in case a burglar tries to manipulate the bolt assembly with an ice pick or other lock-picking instrument.

This is why when you’re purchasing a deadbolt lock, you may want to pay a bit more for a “jimmy-proof” one.

How Deadbolts Are Vulnerable to Burglars

If you’re wondering how a burglar might pick or destroy your lock to break in, here are some of the methods you need to be aware of. Knowing how they might attack your deadbolt will help you make a better choice when you’re in the home improvement store looking to purchase door hardware.

Sawing — Bolts made from brass or other soft metals can be sawn off with a hacksaw blade. Choose a lock with a steel bolt or with a hardened steel insert.

Jimmying — This is when a thief inserts a pry bar between the door and the frame near the extended bolt. They wiggle it back and forth until the bolt is freed from the strike plate. Choose a longer bolt to make your lock harder to jimmy. Also ensure your deadbolt has at least a 1-inch throw (1 inch of the bolt extends past the edge of the door).

Wrenching — A wrench can be clamped onto a cylinder guard, allowing the cylinder to be twisted right off the door. To thwart this, choose deadbolts with tapered free-spinning cylinder guards, which make them hard to wrench.

Lock Picking — This is probably the least of your worries when choosing a door lock. Lock picking is a tricky skill to learn, and burglars can usually find easier ways to break into a home. Even professional locksmiths will spend 10 minutes or more opening your lock if you lose your keys, and most burglars don’t have that kind of time. However, in a large city or high-crime area, there may be professional lock pickers out there who pride themselves on their skills and will find their way to your door. To have your best shot at thwarting them, choose high-security cylinders for all your exterior door locks.

Look at it this way. With all of the electronic alarm systems placed in almost every home that we can find today, why is it that there are still stories about folks getting robbed or reports of people stressed by outsiders? The reason for this is that even with all the complicated protection systems produced in the market today, lock pickers and burglars will still find a technique to elude them and get inside your house! I recollected 2 homes where my neighbors lived. These 2 homes were full of valuable things, like jewellery, a safe full of money and the rest. Now the owner of the first house bragged about his electronic alarm that may frighten the wits of anyone who goes near his house. He particularly placed alarms in his two doors ; one at the main door and the other was at the kitchen. He was gloating about how pricey they were and how effective they are, according to the sales representative!

The second house owner was quite a silent person but he informed me that his house is well-protected. I asked how, when he didn’t have those fancy alarms. He said to me that his locks were made by a master locksmith and it doesn’t cost that much either. He declared that only he knows the best way to open it, as the locksmith explained to him how burglars these days could essentially be your own neighbor and pretend to be amiable to check where and how they’d attack your home at night. He also told me all about how lock pickers can simply go in your house, despite all the fancy contraptions that you have installed inside your home. I shook my head, asserting that locks and lock picking are systems of long ago. My neighbor only laughed and claimed that lock making and lock picking have been passed by locksmiths and lock pickers unto their apprentices! And boy was I surprised when morning came! That night, the house of the braggart neighbor who relied too much on home alarms got robbed while the house owner with powerful locks was safe.

I learned plenty because of that situation. Locksmiths are indeed your number one defense against thieves and lock pickers. Yes, it’d sound old, but locksmiths build the strongest locks on your doors so you never need to stress about thieves at night when you are sleeping or traveling. I am not condoning the modern security alarms today, but with all of those electronic alarms advertised by the greedy market of today, you can’t ever be too sure. It may sound traditional, but a strong and sturdy lock has protected my grandfather’s home for generations. Locksmiths are still available today and all you have to do is call them. Make the correct choice friend!

If you have ever locked yourself out of the car with no spare key then you will understand the importance of finding a trustworthy auto locksmith. Because of the advances in auto locksmith systems it is unrealistic to think that you will be able to pick your car lock on your own.

Sure 20 years ago this could have been the case but these days you have more chance of damaging your car than you do of actually being able to pick locks on your car.

So finding a trustworthy locksmith service is the best bet if you happen to be one of those unfortunates that is forever locking themselves out of the car without having a spare key.

You will need to use a locksmith that has experience because being able to pick locks on cars is something that can take years to master, and the last thing you need is an inexperienced locksmith using you car as lock picking practice.

A good place to start looking for a reliable locksmith is through asking friends and family. A good recommendation from someone you know and trust can lead you straight to the locksmith service you need.

If you can’t get a good recommendation then it can also help to do a search on the web; by typing the phrase “pick locks” and your location you will be able to have a look at the different locksmiths in your area. Most professional locksmiths will have their licenses and credentials displayed on their website so you will be able to check out what type of company they are and if they have hired professional, well trained technicians.

Locksmith Directory Los Angeles Locks Picking

We have also expanded our services this year to include on site directory to help your business. Thanks to all our members for your participation and support in helping us to grow. We now can boast a membership of over 300 and it’s increasing everyday. Locksmithing began as the science and art of making and defeating locks. A lock is a mechanism that secures buildings, rooms, cabinets, food, or other storage facilities. A key is often used to open a lock. Means of opening a lock often include what you know (a combination), what you have (a key or keycard) or what you are.

Locksmithing is one of the earliest forms of security engineering Lock picking was one of the first methods of cracking security systems.

Terminology

A “smith” of any type is one who shapes metal pieces, often using a forge or mould, into useful objects or to be part of a more complex structure. Locksmithing, as its name implies, is the assembly and designing of locks and their respective keys.

Work

Although fitting of keys to replace lost keys to automobiles and homes and the changing of keys for homes and businesses to maintain security are still an important part of locksmithing, locksmiths today are primarily involved in the installation of higher quality locksets and the design, implementation and management of keying and key control systems. Most locksmiths also do electronic lock servicing, such as making keys for transponder-equipped vehicles and the implementation and application of access control systems protecting individuals and assets for many large institutions. In terms of physical security, a locksmith’s work frequently involves making a determination of the level of risk to an individual or institution and then recommending and implementing appropriate combinations of equipment and policies to create “security layers” which exceed the reasonable gain to an intruder or attacker. The more different security layers are implemented, the more the requirement for additional skills and knowledge and tools to defeat them all. But because each layer comes at an expense to the customer, the application of appropriate levels without exceeding reasonable costs to the customer is often very important and requires a skilled and knowledgeable locksmith to determine.

Employment

Locksmiths may be commercial (working out of a storefront), mobile (working out of a vehicle), institutional (employed by an institution) or investigational (forensic locksmiths) or may specialize in one aspect of the skill, such as an automotive lock specialist, a master key system specialist or a safe technician. Many (not all) are also security consultants, but not every security consultant has the skills and knowledge of a locksmith. Locksmiths are frequently certified in specific skill areas or to a level of skill within the trade. This is separate from certificates of completion of training courses. In determining skill levels, certifications from manufacturers or locksmith associations are usually more valid criteria than certificates of completion. Some locksmiths decide to call themselves “Master Locksmiths” whether they are fully trained or not, and some training certificates appear quite authoritative. It may be noted, however, that in some countries a particular level of qualification or membership of an organization is required before one can adopt the term Master Locksmith.

Locks

In the general case, a lock will not keep out an absolutely determined intruder with unlimited resources, skills, knowledge and time. However, even a minimal lock can delay a typical intruder for a time, and the disturbance generated in circumventing a high-quality lock, for example by breaking windows or doors, can deter many attackers, causing them to direct their attacks against weaker targets.

When combined with secure containers, or document destruction systems, or electronic access or alarm systems, locks can provide much higher levels of security. Some locksmiths possess these skills, and others form business relationships with companies or individuals with these specialties.

Full disclosure’

The issue of full disclosure was first raised in the context of locksmithing, in a 19th century controversy regarding whether weaknesses in lock systems should be kept secret in the locksmithing community, or revealed to the public.

According to A. C. Hobbs:

A commercial, and in some respects a social doubt has been started within the last year or two, whether or not it is right to discuss so openly the security or insecurity of locks. Many well-meaning persons suppose that the discussion respecting the means for baffling the supposed safety of locks offers a premium for dishonesty, by showing others how to be dishonest. This is a fallacy. Rogues are very keen in their profession, and know already much more than we can teach them respecting their several kinds of roguery. Rogues knew a good deal about lock-picking long before locksmiths discussed it among themselves, as they have lately done. If a lock, let it have been made in whatever country, or by whatever maker, is not so inviolable as it has hitherto been deemed to be, surely it is to the interest of honest persons to know this fact, because the dishonest are tolerably certain to apply the knowledge practically; and the spread of the knowledge is necessary to give fair play to those who might suffer by ignorance. It cannot be too earnestly urged that an acquaintance with real facts will, in the end, be better for all parties. Some time ago, when the reading public was alarmed at being told how London milk is adulterated, timid persons deprecated the exposure, on the plea that it would give instructions in the art of adulterating milk; a vain fear, milkmen knew all about it before, whether they practiced it or not; and the exposure only taught purchasers the necessity of a little scrutiny and caution, leaving them to obey this necessity or not, as they pleased.

Locksmithing is a traditional trade, and in most countries requires completion of an Apprenticeship. The level of formal education required varies from country to country, from a simple training certificate awarded by an employer, to a full Diploma from an Engineering College (such as in Australia) in addition to time spent working as an apprentice.

Locks and opening of locks have been a fascination for the entire world populace since time immemorial. Locks have the value of intrigue as they conceal objects, protect them and establish ownership by belonging only to the person who owns the key to their unraveled world however the last statement might not hold good for long as the advent of locksmiths are here to stay and with a profound know how of locks and locking systems anyone can open any lock, the era of locksmiths can be dated back to the age of the Egyptian domination where locksmiths were given special privileges as they were considered as harbingers of good luck owing to the fact that these locksmiths could open all locks specially so locks to chests and treasure trunks. Locksmiths have evolved into a very ethical and credible group of people who usually don’t pick locks for people unless the property that is locked is owned by the person who is asking for the locksmith’s services or if they have the permission of the owner to pick the lock. Locksmiths go beyond just picking locks, they also extend their services to installation of security systems at workplaces and residential quarters, and they also deal with high end security solutions with instruments like sensors and radars.

What does it actually take to b a master locksmith? Well the first and foremost thing is a passion to open locks, a thirst and an urge to go beyond the physicality of a lock. Whether it is Robert Barron who patented a double-acting tumbler lock in 1778 or Joseph Bramah who filed a patent for his safety lock in 1784 which was rendered unpickable for 67 years ; Jeremiah Chubb who in 1818 patented a special variety of a detector lock or the very famous James Sargent who explained the concepts behind the first successful key-changeable combination lock in 1857 all these experts had an undying passion to make, break and improvise locks for passion of the art and to be of service to humanity in as small a way as is possible. A master locksmith understand that locks have different varieties of interiors, they must have a thorough know how of both Bored cylindrical lock and Mortice lock, the two varied approaches to locking mechanisms , work and utilize their knowledge to the best of their ability to build the locks and locking systems most suitable for their professional needs and the needs of their clients.

The best way to becoming a master locksmith is to try and be a learner for a stipulated period of time and learn and understand all that is there to lockpicking. Locksmiths are no longer people who merely break open old locks, their services in our modern times have advanced with technology and they have extended their scope of work to tasks that include manufacturing, installing and maintaining security devices such as key cards, flash security and id cards, voice and bio identification security systems, biometric finger print analyzers. Moving on from being general locksmiths now the era of specialization has also started therefore it is critical that a master locksmith is up to date with technological advancements and can think out of the box for solutions to locking and security problems. Books are a major source of knowledge that locksmiths can make use of, they can also harness on the advantages of the internet. There are also institutions that now offer short term and long term courses for locksmiths, this can be a great step towards being a better locksmith.

A master locksmith is not the result of an overnight decision or preparation; it takes time effort and sustained interest in constantly improving the cause of locksmiths to get there. With the abundance in available support it should not be a daunting task to achieve a master status in locksmithing. Regular reading, constant practice and divergent thinking contribute a great deal to the cause of better locksmiths. A deep love for the subject, a firm foot on technical and technological advancements that can be used in favor of locksmiths and a nature of intrigue towards locksmithing can all go a long way in making a master locksmith.
